When do you need a ski pass? You will need a ski pass to use the lifts in any resort although there are sometimes exceptions if you are a very young, old or a complete beginner. It is an offence to try and ski without a lift pass. Your ski pass will be checked at most lift stations, so it is best to attach it where it can be seen without you having to remove gloves and open jackets! Many lift passes are now ‘hands free’ and can be left zipped in your pocket. There are readers at the bottom of each lift which detect your pass as you walk close.
![]() Cheap Lift passesThe best time for cheap lift passes is low season. This is usually from the beginning of the season to the week prior to Christmas, the first 2-3 weeks in January and then the final weeks of the season. When offers are made they usually only apply to lift passes lasting 6 days or longer. It also depends a lot on the resort. Look out for promotional offers; they will be displayed on the skiholidayextras.com home page as and when they arise so you won't miss out on the option to buy a cheap ski pass. Ski Pass CoverageSki passes may cover one resort only, the resort and the adjoining villages or all lift linked resorts. For example in La Plagne you can buy a La Plagne ski pass for just the La Plagne domain or else a lift pass for the Paradiski area which includes Les Arcs. 6 day lift passes in resorts such as Alpe D'Huez and Les Deux Alpes often include a day in a nearby station for a change of scenery! In a few places you can get lift passes aimed at beginners which allow you on just one or two lifts near the resort. Lift pass durationSkiing holidays typically last a week and the standard lift pass is a 6-day pass from Sunday to Friday. Any duration is possible however and you can select the start date for your pass. You may be able to take advantage of skiing on the first and/or last day of your stay. In this case you would need a 7 or 8-day lift pass for your week's skiing holiday. If you are arriving Saturday morning you can always by a half-day pass in resort. Take it easy, sort your kit out, enjoy a big brunch in resort and then buy a local half day lift pass and enjoy a relaxed afternoon getting your ski legs back! Who the lift pass is forPasses are priced according to age group and there are sometimes group or family rates. If you are buying a family lift pass you still will receive individual passes for each member of the family. Young children and seniors may be entitled to free ski passes - check the age ranges and options at the time of booking to make sure you are getting the best possible combination of passes for your family. Extra InsuranceThe insurance for incidents and accidents on the slopes that can be bought at the lift pass office alongside your lift pass is known as 'Carré Neige'. It costs 2.5€ per person a day. It covers rescue from the slopes if you get lost, not just if you have an accident and is definately recommended if you intend to ski off-piste. Carré Neige will also reimburse you if you cannot use your ski passes for more than three days due to accident or bad weather, however if you are travelling from the UK you should already have a travel insurance policy. Most insurance policies will cover you for this already so there is no need to buy Carré Neige as well but you MUST check the details of your policy as they all vary - especially in regard to off-piste coverage. This can be purchased on our site under the Insurance section of the booking engine - choose the Assur'Neige option which is equivalent to the Carré Neige. |
